Royal tour to Canada 2011

Here's some of the things they will do while in Canada:

Highlights of their itinerary include (taken from http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/06/21/royal-tour.html):

June 30 —Their first official function is laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial. They will then head to Rideau Hall where they will be greeted by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Governor General and receive full military honours including a 21-gun salute.There will be a youth barbecue and reception in the garden of Government House.


July 1 — They will attend a citizenship ceremony at the Museum of Civilization and then it's off to Parliament Hill for Canada Day celebrations, where William will briefly address the crowd.
 
July 2 — After a tree planting at Rideau Hall and a reception for war veterans and war brides, the couple depart for Montreal. There, they will visit Saint-Justine Hospital, a facility for young cancer patients, and go to the Institut de tourism et d'hotelerie where they will participate in a class of chefs in training. The students will then serve them a private dinner. Amid a fireworks competition in the harbour, the couple board HMCS Montreal for the overnight journey to Quebec City.


July 3 — The couple will meet the Royal 22nd Regiment, the Van Doos, who have just returned from Afghanistan. Expect an inspection of the guard and a walkabout. They then head to the Citadel and after some down time depart for Levi Fort to participate in a fair. They depart by plane to Charlottetown where they will stay at Government House.


July 4 — In the morning, they will tour Province House, and be greeted by the Fathers of Confederation on the steps. There will be a welcome by Premier Robert Ghiz and then a walkabout on George Street. Then they will head to Dalvay by the Sea. After a brief rest, they attend an outdoor reception complete with BBQ, dragon boat race and music. They will be greeted by Anne of Green Gables and do a walkabout. They depart for Summerside by helicopter where they will see a search and rescue demonstration and attend a reception for fishermen rescued by such teams. They leave for Yellowknife.


July 5 — At Somba Ke Civic Plaza, the couple will be welcomed by the premier and aboriginal leaders in a ceremony that includes prayer and drum songs. They will do a walkabout with aboriginal athletic events. At a Territorial Legislature for Youth Parliament event, young people from different ridings will come to the legislature and try to solve a problem of their choosing and report their results to William. The couple then travel by sea plane to Blatchford Lodge to meet with Canadian Rangers. After walking to Dechinta Centre, which tries to recapture the aboriginal language and culture for young people, they return to Yellowknife and retire for the night.


July 6 —The couple depart for Calgary and have the day to themselves in a private location.


July 7 — After visiting Foothills Hospital, they head to the BMO Centre for a reception hosted by Harper and his wife. There will be a gift presentation from the government of Canada to the couple and a speech by Harper.


July 8 — The couple will attend the launch of the Calgary Stampede parade and watch part of the parade. Then they visit ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. Their final stop is Challenger Rotary Park where William will do an inspection of the guard with full military honours.


They depart Calgary airport at 1:40 MT for Los Angeles to start their U.S. tour.

WOO HOO - I've been watching the coverage on TV for the last hour or so - so much fun...and I don't know why it is fun because you can't hear what they are saying and they are just shaking hands and smiling - but I love it anyway!

I'm not the only crazy Royal fan!  ha ha

HEE HEE - as they were walking to the car, they took different sides of the crowd to shake hands.  Once they met up at the end and were walking along to the cars, out of the blue, Kate darts off to the side to where there must have been a little kid with some flowers.   BOY...did the security jump into action - but she was back with the group before they even reached her.  HA HA

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Cricut Circle's Patriotic Pride Challenge - Canada Day

I decided to try my hand at a challenge this week - mainly because I've never scrap booked anything "Canada Day" before - which is because I absolutely HATE RED but also because we never do anything that warrants having a photo around to do a Canada Day layout with.

 Here's the challenge:

The Cricut Circle's 35the weekly challenge was a Patriotic Pride Challenge
The Challenge: Whether you are from the United States, Canada, Australia or somewhere else, we want you to show us your Patriotic Pride with this next challenge! Create any type of project (scrapbook layout, card, home decor, . . . it’s up to you!) showing off your patriotic spirit!

Rules and Guidelines: Circle Blog Challenges are open to Cricut Circle Members only. Your project must be newly created for this challenge and include at least 2 Cricut Image Cuts. You must submit a project to be entered into the Challenge Prize Drawing. One entry per person, please.

Here's my submission - all the cuts were from the Destinations cartridge - the leaves and the Canada label. All the red leaves were inked with brown ink and popped up with pop-dots, but you can't really see it in the photos.

The shape of the maple leaf is beautiful on this cartridge.  I actually enjoyed making this page even IF there's alot of red on it.  I kind of hope I'll have the opportunity to scrapbook "Canada Day" type stuff again, I'm surprised I like it as much as I do.  

We never really DO anything for Canada day - watch the ceremony from Ottawa on TV and maybe take PJ to the playground...but its always a short event because GJA's band always plays downtown on Canada Day afternoon.  The last time I went was when PJ was almost 4 months old...so he was immobile.  He didn't like the loud music and I'm sure he'd hate it more now...and he'd be RUNNING the entire time...it would be a nightmare.   Before PJ, we'd sometimes have friends over for burgers....but really...we did nothing special for Canada Day other than not go into work.

THIS year, William and Kate will be in Ottawa for the ceremony - we we'll TOTALLY be watching!

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Posing with Dad

This is a page that has several photos of GJA and PJ on it from 2008.

The cartridges used are locker talk (camera) and Mickey Font (for, well, the title)

I wasn't too sure about this paper but I really ended up liking it alot.  When you click on the layout and see it larger, there are stripes that are that teal color - so my color choice in the title isn't as crazy as it appears to be.

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Christmas morning & Eve

Sorry, these are blurry...not sure why.

I was snap-happy at Christmas in 2008.  We always have a bunch over for Christmas Eve and I rarely take photos - but this year I was crazy with my camera and I'm glad I was because I love the photo with my brother "flying" PJ around the kitchen.  Actually - looks like I've forgotten to do journalling...OOPS!

On Christmas morning, PJ was teasing his Grandmother by pretending to touch the tree-ornaments - he made some cute faces!  HA HA - I left space for journaling...but haven't done it yet...bad scrapbooker.

Cartridges used:  Mickey Font (I love this one) and SYI (Stretch your Imagination) for the holly

School house - end of year card

I finally finished my 8 pop-up cards with a school house inside (yes 8 - there are 8 teachers/aides/therapists in PJ's class).  I think they turned out pretty good (considering I'm the one making them).

Here are some photos of some of the pieces after they were cut (I used the gypsy to squish as many as I could into the smallest piece of paper.

Here's the front of the card - I did some inking around the white piece and the apple:

I added the tree and grass myself.  It took awhile to figure out how to get the tree to pop-up...and as long as it does it the 1st time they open the card, that's good enough for me.  I wanted some dimension, so I put the tree slightly ahead of the building...which made it hard to do the grass...so its only adhered with glue on the tree trunk.

Cartridges used are Pop-Up Neighborhood (schoolhouse), Doodlecharms (apple), Campin Critters (tree), Plantin Schoolbook (grass).  I used glossy accents for the windows and the stamp is from Stampin' Up.

2011 Lilacs

Seems to be a tradition for me to take photos of my pathetic lilac tree and post on here...so I don't want to mess-up the 3 year series (even if it IS boring).

Last year I added another wee bush to go along with the 1st bush ... and its a good thing because it appears that it bloomed more than the original bush...great.  This year, Bath and Body Works had a lilac fragrance which I just LOVE - GJA, however, hates it...BOO HOO.

All the blooms have been knocked off by the crazy rain we've had over the past week.  Thankfully they were at the end of their useful life, so I was able to enjoy them before the rain ruined them.

Its certainly getting bigger - here's a photo from 2009.

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Dad & his crazy horn

GJA plays trombone in a jazz band and he brought it out for PJ to see (and hear).  He also (at the time of this photo) just purchased a double bell euphonium (he now has 3, or is it 4...this is the reason why I keep purchasing carts - to keep up with the $ spent on silly musical instruments that he'll never use) that he wanted to try out.

The font is Plantin cartridge and the horn is from Everyday Paper Doll cartridge.  I put them through the xyron and covered in Martha Stewart glitter.

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Splish Splash

Here are some photos of PJ in the bath - he cooperated very nicely considering he normally bathes with Dad.

The font used is Mickey Font cartridge and the tub and tot are both from Everyday Paper Dolls cartridge.  The little face is a peachy keen stamp.  You can't tell in the photo, but the shower hose and the tub feet are sparkly silver/grey paper.  I used skittles for "bubbles" on the bath tub.

Cricut Circle - Canadian Calling Card Swap - spring 2011

Some of the Canadian Circlets decided to make calling cards to send to each other.  These are 3x3 cards that are decorated and on the back we include our name, e-mail and blog.  Typically these are to be taken with you and traded at gatherings.  There haven't BEEN any gatherings in Canada so we thought we'd just swap amongst ourselves.

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Christmas Wishes

One Christmas, everyone wanted to have their photo taken with PJ...whether he liked it or not.  I just slapped them on a page and whipped up a title (as you probably can tell, I do that alot...slapping things on paper).   Its hard to do otherwise when you're working with good photos that don't have alot of room to crop.

The word "Christmas" is from JOTS (Joys of the Season) cartridge and the word "Wishes" Calligraphy Collection.

Summer Reality TV - WOO HOO

Ok, Reality TV is pretty suspect...but I LOVE it!! The fluffiest of them all are those that run in the summer...and they are SO MUCH FUN to watch!

Inadequate education?

Does anyone feel like the public education system is lacking or the fact that you send your kid to public education means you aren't giving them the best chance at an amazing education.  By public, I mean...you don't PAY anything for it.

A dear friend of mine lives in Australia and her girls go to a private school.  I googled it for fun and BOY is it ever expensive (considering we pay zero for it here).  Then, I made the mistake today to read their new letters (and archives) and wow they sure do alot of stuff in their school year.  There's tons of scheduled sports and music and trips and and and....    It even sounds a bit like Hogwarts - there's 4 school houses. Its the top ranked school for student achievement in Western Australia.

Now, I guess I should mention that I don't really know what will be offered/taught to kids at school now (since PJ isn't in Kindergarten yet)....but I definitely know that it wasn't that involved when I was at school.    Granted, that was a million years ago...but I'm going to take a wild guess that it ain't going to be like what they get at this particular school.

School card - trying Pop-Up Neighbourhood

I just got my 4th quarter cartridge from the Cricut Circle and there are some cute cuts on it - I like the tree with the tire swing, the fence, lawn-mower and a bunch of other ones.  I need to get PJ onto a farm so I can make the cute tractor and other cute farm things.

I attempted to make one of the pop-ups....which don't really interest me because they are mainly buildings...why do I want to make a card with a building popping up inside?  WELL...I made the little school house...and is it EVER cute.  I think I'm going to make it for the teachers/therapists this year.

Here's a prototype...All the pieces were colored and cut using the imagine more cartridge and gypsy.  There are obviously things I would change and add (like not white paper for the card and pop-up and I may add grass and a tree or something to go with the schoolhouse.  The cartridges used are Pop-Up Neighborhood and Imagine More.

The hard part is knowing what size to make it so it'll fit in a standard card.  Everything was cut at 4.3.  I think I would make the non-pop-up part slightly bigger to see if it'll hide the "box" holding it all up.

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Merry Christmas

I see a theme here - scrapbook pages where all I've used the cricut for is the title.  Actually, this makes sense for me because the reason I got the cricut was because I wanted to do fonts. I was tired of the old die-cut stuff at our LSS (actually, all of them) because there was only 1 style and sometimes it was to big or too small for what you wanted to do. ALSO, I rarely got to GO to the LSS now that has PJ arrived, so I wanted easy to make die cut letters of various styles and sizes...so what better to easily do this than a Cricut!

This layout is no exception - the title is the only part that uses the cricut. These were pre-made words from the Beyond Birthdays cartridge - I put glitter on the tree (after Merry) and on the "dot" of the "i" in Christmas.

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Spoons are Tricky & Hide in Here

PJ doesn't like to be sticky so when he actually got yogurt on his face, I had to run and get my camera because I didn't know if it would happen again.  He seemed OK being sticky...but now, forget it - no stickiness allowed.  It was his first attempt at using a spoon.

The font is from Mickey Font cartridge and the spoon I made from George cartridge (with an oval and  rectangle).  The spoon is with shiny paper, but you can't tell from the photo

PJ loved to hide in this wee cupboard.  He'd sign "help" so I would come and help him lift his feet in and to close the doors. Now that he's 5, he can't fit anymore, but he sometimes sure tries (even now, 3 years later)!

Scrapbook Layout - 2008 Playground Time

This is PJ's 1st time at a real playground.  It was Canada Day (July 1) 2008.  He wasn't too sure about going down the slide (so he sat on me and we went down together).  It was a wee bit of a fight, but he enjoyed it.  It was also his 1st time on a swing.  It took him awhile to control his head and not topple out but he sure liked it - he even signed "more" because he loved it so much.
