Recycling

I don't have an issue with the concept of recycling - I understand the importance. I also see where paying a deposit on bottles is to encourage you to recycle them - because you recoup the deposit on the bottles if you take them to the recycling depot.

What I DO have a problem with is this particular task in the hands of a procrastinating hoarder - aka GJA! The last time we took bottles to be recycled, it was Christmas...and we had to take 2 trips and came out of there with over $100. DO THE MATH...only some types of bottles give you 25 cents back! GJA was all pleased with himself...I was just annoyed because we had this wasted real estate for 6 months where all these bottles were accumulating.

NOW we have to recycle (hoard) milk cartons - great...we go through 2 to 4-litre jugs a week - where are we to have room for all of that amongst all of the accumulating bottles/cans? If I could just get GJA to commit to go to the recycle depot every month, that would be ok...but it hasn't happened yet since, as I said above...CHRISTMAS!

Here just a portion of the state of the bottles/cans in our basement today:

  1. There is an easy cure for that: give GJA a monthly deadline where anything not taken to the recycling center goes in the trash. You must be consistent and firm and never deviate from this schedule. Just as with children, you must be consistent and firm. Tough love, D, tough love.

  2. Do you really think that will work? He'll have a fit because he's such a hoarder (has OCD about it) and will have a total meltdown.

  3. OMG - so GJA said he doesn't think that is right that I should be throwing them out because its wasting $...AND he doesn't want to go to the recycling depot too often because he'll get TB (OMG).

  4. Consistent and firm: you are not responsible for them going in the trash, he is by not taking them to recycling as scheduled.

It is a compromse: you allow things to build up for a apecified interval, though it makes you crazy, because you know saving the planet is important to him. He commits to taking the piles o' stuff to recycling at the specified interval because 1) he wants to save the planet, and 2) he wants just as much to promote harmony in his marriage.

TB? You can get tuberculosis at the recycling depot?

Is GJA going to hate me when I come visit? Perhaps I should not meet him. Or maybe we will tell him my name is Betty and I'm from Calgary.

  5. HA HA...cares about the environment...ha ha...he's scottish...he only cares about getting the $ - and he risks getting TB to get it (ha ha ... he's so crazy!)

He's not going to hate you because he doesn't know who's put these ideas into my head.

Don't get me going on compromising

    ;)
